Thirty-one hours after we left our hotel in Minneapolis and headed toward the airport, we arrived at our hotel in Chiang Mai. When we landed at the Chiang Mai airport at 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday, we breezed through immigration and customs, only to find that there was not a single taxi anywhere near the airport. Apparently, taxi drivers have to sleep, too. Who knew? After about 30 minutes of standing around aimlessly, one of the other American couples who was waiting around called their hotel and requested that a taxi be sent from the hotel to pick us all up. About 10 minutes later, our transportation arrived, piled half of our bags in the back of the car and the other half precariously on the roof, and off we went!
Wednesday morning, after about 3 hours of sleep, we both woke up and decided it was high time for us to get out and explore our environs. The weather was beautiful (upper 70s), and we walked around for probably an hour or so. We walked past hotels, restaurants, markets, 7-Elevens, internet cafes, houses, road-side food carts, coconut trees, banana trees, roosters in baskets, no fewer than a dozen signs advertising "Charlie's Fish and Chips", and many Buddhist temples.
Wednesday afternoon we succumbed to jet-lag. Despite our best efforts to stay awake and upright, we both finally gave up and took a nap. Because neither of us had gotten more than 3 hours of sleep on the entire 31-hour journey, and we'd only slept 3 hours after arriving, we ended up napping for 4 hours! Oops!
Wednesday evening we explored the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. It is a huge open-air market with hundreds of individual stalls offering handicrafts, clothing, jewelry, backpacks, artworks, and so on. There are also dozens of food carts and restaurants. This market goes on for blocks and is held every night. So much to see!
It's time to go walk around to stave off a jet-lag induced coma. More updates later.
